Lawrence Hubbs was born in Woodstock, IL and raised in the picturesque countryside of northern Illinois. From a young age, he discovered that drawing was a way to capture attention, praise, and encouragement from his parents. This early artistic inclination led him to study oil painting under Victoria Huntley and pursue an art major at Missouri State University, followed by attending the esteemed American Academy of Art in Chicago.
As a youth, Lawrence spent countless hours at his local small-town movie theater, immersing himself in the magic of films and experiencing different worlds, sights, and characters with each new screening. His passion for movies inspired him to dream of working in the film industry someday. That dream began to take shape when he moved to Los Angeles, where he secured an entry-level job in the mailroom at CBS. He quickly climbed the ranks, moving to the Art Department and eventually becoming a Set Designer, responsible for creating visually stunning sets for TV shows and feature films.
Over the course of his 30-year career in the movie industry, Lawrence Hubbs made significant contributions as an Assistant Art Director and an Art Director. His work on films like “Superman Returns” and “Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” earned him nominations for best Art Direction from the Art Directors Guild, with “Indiana Jones” winning the coveted award. He also was apart of the award winning films “Max Headroom”, which received an Emmy for Best TV Art Direction and “Bugsy” which received an Oscar for Best Film Art Direction.
In addition to his successful career in the movie industry, Lawrence has also gained recognition in the art world. He has won several awards, including “Best of Show” and “Best Watercolor” in art shows in the Los Angeles area. His paintings have been sold in Washington, Illinois, and California, and his work has been featured in prestigious exhibitions, such as the ADG (Art Directors Guild) annual art shows at the ADG Gallery 800, the ADG art show at the Ghettogloss Gallery, and the annual “Art About Agriculture” exhibits at the Santa Paula Art Museum, among others.
Today, Lawrence Hubbs continues to pursue his passion for creativity through his captivating acrylic on canvas paintings. His artwork reflects his unique artistic perspective and experiences, showcasing his exceptional talent, skill, and dedication to his craft.
